Legacy x Coventry Blaze concept

Legacy x Coventry Blaze concept

Inside Legacy Studio: Designing a Concept Jacket for Coventry Blaze

Not every piece that comes out of Legacy Studio starts with a confirmed order. Sometimes a club comes to us wanting to see an idea on its feet before anything else is agreed, and that's exactly how this one began.

Where it started

We were approached by Coventry Blaze to put together a concept jacket, something that could show the club what a Legacy varsity build would look like carrying their crest, before any commitment to a full run. No fixture to tie it to, no event on the calendar. Just a chance to show what the design language we use elsewhere in the EIHL could do with the Blaze badge at the centre of it.

That's a different kind of brief to work from. There's no theme to lean on, no championship to reference. The jacket has to sell itself on craft alone.

The build

We went back to the simplest version of the varsity silhouette for this one: black wool body, no contrast panelling, just clean lines that let the crest do the talking. The restraint was deliberate. A concept piece needs to look finished, not busy, so a club can picture it in full production without any noise around the idea.

The Blaze dragon sits front and centre on the back, embroidered at full scale in the club's blue and silver, the detail in the wings and horns picked out thread by thread rather than flattened into a simple patch. It's the kind of crest that only works oversized, so we gave it the space to breathe across the full width of the jacket.

On the front, the same crest repeats smaller on the chest, alongside the "BLAZE" wordmark beneath it in the club's block lettering. Striped rib trim at the collar, cuffs, and hem in black and grey keeps it grounded in the varsity tradition the whole range is built on.

Why it matters

Concept pieces like this are where Legacy Studio does some of its best work, because there's nothing to fall back on except the design itself. If a club can hold this jacket, see their crest done justice, and picture their supporters wearing it, the pitch has done its job.

We're glad to have had the chance to put this one together for Coventry Blaze, and we'd love the opportunity to take it from concept to production.

Legacy Studio is where Legacy Sportswear designs and produces custom kit for our club partners, from concept sketch to finished stitch.
