Designing the Guildford Flames Retro Game Letterman Jacket
Every so often a project lands on the design table that's more than just another product. The Guildford Flames Retro Game letterman jacket was one of those.
Where it started
The brief was simple to say and harder to deliver: build a jacket that felt like it belonged in a trophy cabinet, not a merchandise rail. Retro Game nights are about nostalgia, about the club leaning back into its history for one night, and the jacket needed to carry that same weight. It couldn't be another printed hoodie with a badge slapped on the front. It had to be earned.
That's where Legacy Studio comes in. It's the design and production side of Legacy Sportswear, the part of the business that sits behind the match-day stands and the Shopify listings, working out how to turn a club crest into something people will still be wearing in ten years.

The build
We went with a classic varsity silhouette: heavyweight wool body, leather sleeves, ribbed collar and cuffs in black and white. It's a shape with a hundred years of history behind it, and we wanted the Flames branding to earn its place inside that tradition rather than fight against it.
The front carries two details. On the left chest, an embroidered commemoration of the night itself, the Retro Game date stitched in a script that feels handwritten rather than printed. On the right, the club wordmark in red and white from the 92 era, the first thing anyone reads when they look at you.
Then the back. This was never going to be anything other than the Flames G crest, oversized because that logo is the whole reason the jacket exists. Snap buttons down the front instead of a zip, because a letterman jacket without snaps isn't really a letterman jacket.

Why it matters
A lot of what we produce at Legacy is designed to be worn on a match day and washed by Monday. This one wasn't. It's built as a keepsake, something a fan pulls out of the wardrobe years from now and remembers exactly which night it belonged to. That's the standard we hold Legacy Studio's design work to: not just merchandise, but pieces that carry a memory.
If you were part of Retro Game, you'll know why this one means a bit more.
