Inside Legacy Studio: Designing the Nottingham Mavericks Letterman Jacket

University hockey has a different energy to the senior league, and the kit needs to reflect that. This one leans hard into classic campus varsity, and it's better for it.

Where it started

Nottingham Mavericks, the university's ice hockey team, wanted a jacket that felt authentically collegiate rather than a scaled-down version of a professional club design. University sport carries its own traditions, and a mascot as strong as a Maverick bull gave us plenty to build the identity around.

The build

We built this one in the boldest colourway in the range so far: black wool body, white leather sleeves, and green and white ribbed trim at the collar, cuffs, and hem. That green is doing a lot of work, it's the flash of colour that makes the whole jacket feel distinctly Mavericks rather than generic varsity black and white.

The front carries the layered chest detail that classic letterman jackets are built on. A bold "NM" monogram sits on the left in green and blue, the kind of oversized collegiate lettering you'd expect on an American campus jacket. On the right, the full Nottingham Mavericks badge, with the bull mascot . The sleeve carries an embroidered year marker alongside a smaller crest, the detail that turns a jacket into a record of the season it was earned in.

The back is where the mascot gets to properly show off. A large embroidered bull's head, horns raised, hockey stick clenched in its mouth, rendered in green with white and blue detailing. It's characterful in a way that a wordmark alone never could be, and it's exactly the kind of asset that makes a university jacket instantly recognisable across a rink.

Why it matters

University teams live and die on identity and pride, students want kit that feels like it belongs to their years at the institution, not just their season on the ice. Leaning into the green, the bull mascot, and genuine collegiate lettering gave Nottingham Mavericks something that will still mean something to alumni years after they've graduated.
