Inside Legacy Studio: Designing the Guildford Flames Heritage Jacket

Some pieces celebrate a single night. This one was built to celebrate an era.

Where it started

The Heritage jacket started with a different kind of brief. Not a single fixture or a themed evening, but the club's history itself, the players and seasons that built Guildford Flames into what it is today. The 2018-19 Pattern Conference Championship side sits right at the heart of that story, and the jacket needed to read like a tribute to that team rather than a generic club crest on a blank canvas.

That's the job Legacy Studio takes on again and again: turning a club's history into something a fan can actually put on.

The build

We kept the varsity shape but flipped the colour balance from our usual black-on-black builds, running black wool through the body with crisp white leather sleeves, so the jacket reads sharper and more collectible from a distance.

The front carries the layered detail. A large chenille "F" letter patch sits on the right, the kind of oversized varsity letter that anchors the whole jacket. On the left chest, we stacked three pieces of embroidery: the Guildford Flames badge in maroon and gold, the club's Elite League affiliation patch with its championship stars, and beneath that, the words that matter most, "2018-2019 Elite League Southern Conference Champions," stitched in a running script.

The right sleeve is where the tribute really lives. Embroidered names and squad numbers run down the arm, a roll call of the players who won that title. It's the detail that turns a jacket into an archive, something a former player or a fan who was there could point to and say, that's my number, that's the year.

The back keeps it clean and confident. "FLAMES" arched in bold collegiate lettering, navy with a gold outline, big enough to read from across the rink.

Why it matters

Heritage pieces are the hardest thing we make, because they carry more weight than a match-night souvenir. Get the names wrong, get the year wrong, get the balance of the sleeve detail wrong, and you've let down the people the jacket is meant to honour. This one was checked and rechecked before a single stitch went in.

For the players whose names sit on that sleeve, and for the fans who remember watching that team lift the title, this jacket is the closest thing to wearing the history itself.
